Hungarian Dancers Take Prizes in Prague

English

 Bea Egyed and Zoltan Grecsó

Zoltán Grecsó and Bea Egyed won first prize, for Grecsó's solo Bachelor Day and a duet entitled Conversation Full of Salt, and Ágnes Fülöp with Kata Kánya took second prize for Fülöp's solo piece Angelwings...That Were and her duet with Kánya called Instant. The 11th New Europe Festival took place on December 3-7.

Berrak Yedek selected the Hungarian participants from among dancers who performed at the Solo-Duo Festival held earlier in the year. Fülöp , as well as Virág Arany, were winners at the festival.

The seven Hungarian dancers invited to the festival had to prepare a choreography to a composition by the Czech composer Martin Smolka. They were assessed by an international jury of Nina Vangeli, Eva Blazicková, Tomeo Verges, Michael Vincenot and John Ashford.

In his assessment of the prize-winners' works, Ashford said that Hungary has become an important player on the contemporary dance scene, adding an interesting colour to Europe. He said the country's dance scene was not 30 years behind the times, as some Hungarian sceptics argue, but he also warned against blindly following Western trends.

Ashford said he looked forward to a planned visit to Hungary in April.
