Hungarian Exile Made Honourary Citizen of Turkish City

Mikes spent many years in exile in the city together with other compatriots who participated in the failed Rákoczi War of Independence.
 
Erdogan Erken, the honourary Hungarian consul in Tekirdag, said The Turkish Post will issue a commemorative first-day cover with a stamp celebrating Mikes on Friday. The issue will come on the 10th Hungarian Day, an event in the framework of the International Cherry Festival.
 
The translator and expert on Turkey Edit Tasnádi will give a presentation on the city?s role in the cultural and historical ties between Hungary and Turkey.
 
Budapest?s Hungarian-Turkish Friendship Society and the Hungarian Friendship Society of Tekirdag will present a joint volume on Mikes in Turkish and Hungarian. The book contains presentations on Mikes?s life from a conference organised on the 250th anniversary of his death, as well as contributions by the expert on Turkey János Hóvári and the art historian Anna Tüskés.
 
The city will also inaugurate the Mikes Kelemen Park and Memorial on Hungarian Day.
