The week-long festival will start with the screening of Miklos Jancso's latest film "So Much for Justice", a film about King Matthias Corvinus, the Just. The film completed this year will not be part of the competition.

The productions will be judged in five categories: feature films, short features, documentaries, TV films as well as science and education films.

Eva Vezer, managing director of the Hungarian Film Union, said that 120 to 130 foreign guests are expected to turn up for the event, including organisers of the Cannes, Karlovy Vary, Moscow, Locarno, San Sebastian and Venice festivals, critics, journalists and distributors.

The best feature film will receive the Gene Moskowitz award of foreign critics at the closing ceremony.

Outside the capital, four other cities and towns will host screenings of titles selected from this year's festival programme.
