Mario and the Magician, which is set in the early 1990s, at the start of Hungary's post-communist transformation, will compete for the Golden Pyramid at the festival which runs from November 18 until 28.

The film tells the story of Mario, an elegant Italian shoe factory owner who travels to a small Hungarian village and promises work and wealth to the local women, one of whom falls in love with him.

Almási is a well known maker of documentaries, but Mario and the Magician is only his second feature film. The first, Graduation, was made almost 30 years ago.

Mario and the Magician premiered at the 39th Hungarian Film Week.

The Cairo International Film Festival is the most important film competition in the Arab world. The last Hungarian film to be recognised at the festival was The Eighth Day of the Week, for which Judit Elek took the prize for best screenplay in 2006.
