Hungarian Films Play To Global Audience

?Relatives? started the programme of the 25th Vancouver International Film Festival on September 28. The film, an adaptation of a novel by the famous Hungarian writer Zsigmond Móricz was shown in the ?Cinema of Our Time? selection. The screening marked the North American premiere of the film, which stars Sándor Csányi and Ildikó Tóth. About 200,000 filmgoers are expected to attend the festival, which runs from September 28 until October 13.

Two Hungarian films, Ágnes Kocsis?s ?Fresh Air? and György Pálfi?s ?Taxidermia?, are competing in the ?New Visions? selection for the ?Discovery of the Year? award. Fourteen films are competing in the selection.

The 44th New York Film Festival will start on October 1 at Lincoln center. Among the films being shown is Hungarian director Gyula Nemes?s documentary, ?The Barrier of Transience?. Nemes made the film while still a student at Prague?s FAMU, and its international premiere was at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival in 2004. The film examines life on a flood barrier in the Danube before it was cleared to make way for property developers.

At the 3rd China International Cartoon and Digital Arts Festival (CICDAF), held in the city of Changzhou, Lajos Nagy?s rendering of the folk tale ?The Water Fairy? and Mária Horváth?s ?Green Tree St. 66? represented Hungary.
