The agreement was signed by National Resources Minister Miklós Réthelyi and Director General of UNESCO Irina Bokova.
Bokova is participating at the World Science Forum in Budapest. She also met with House Speaker László Kövér and Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
Speaking at a press conference after the signing, Réthelyi noted the significance of Hungary?s UNESCO ambassador, Katalin Bogyay, being elected President of the General Conference of UNESCO.
The Hungarian parties involved in drafting the cooperation agreement included the National Resources Ministry, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Rural Development Ministry?s State Secretariat for Environmental Affairs and the Public Administration and Justice Ministry?s State Secretariat for Social Inclusion, said Bogyay.
The document reshapes earlier cooperation agreements to better fit the challenges of today?s world, such as preserving cultural heritage and protecting the biosphere, she said. It also sums up the possibilities and forms of cooperation in the future, she added.
Among the new elements is a plan to establish an international Roma education and cultural centre in Hungary, Bogyay said.
Bogyay said UNESCO?s General Conference, held between October 25 and November 10, had decided to mark the hundredth anniversaries of the births of the Hungarian neurobiologist János Szentágothai and the conductor György Solti in 2012, as well as the photographer Robert Capa in 2013.
Next year, February 17 will be World Radio Day and April 30 World Jazz Day, she added.
