The order was presented by presidential advisor Pawel Wypich on behalf of President Lech Kaczynski.

Gordon, who started working at the Hungarian Institute in Warsaw in 1977 and became its director in 2005, said he had strived to involve Hungarian and Polish artists, writers, musicians and translators in the institute's programmes because good results can only be achieved by getting to know each other and collaborating.

At the end of 2008, Gordon moved the institute to a new location close to the Palace of Culture and Science, the National Philharmonics, the Polish Dramatic Theatre and the Palace of Arts. The venue can host exhibitions and concerts, and it has a hall with room to seat 40-50, suitable for film screenings and talks. The institute's library has 10,000 volumes available to visitors, among them the 120 students of Hungarian studies at Warsaw University.
