The festival, being held for the 24th time, will start with a performance Shakespeare's Richard III by the Hungarian Theatre of Cluj, Romania. The production is directed by Gábor Tompa with Zsolt Bogdán in the lead. The play also features the oldest active actor in Central Europe, 95-year-old Endre Senkálszky.
On World Theatre Day, March 27, the troupe from Cluj will perform András Visky's play Born for Never, which was shown at last summer's Avignon Festival and rated by festivalier.net among the best plays of 2009.
After the performance, director Tompa will speak with Adrienne Nagy Darvay.
Beyond the Smudgy Mountain, a musical adventure by Dániel Varró and Gábor Presser, will be presented on March 28.
The closing piece in the troupe's series of guest performances will be Andrei Serban's staging of Ingmar Bergman's Cries and Whispers.
Visiting Budapest will continue in April with performances by the Folk Theatre of Subotica, and in May with performances by the M Studio of Sfantu Gheorghe, the Hungarian Dramatic Theatre of Transcarpathia and the Yorick Studio of Targu Mures.
