"We sent copies to Academy members yesterday," said managing director of the film's distributor Zsuzsanna Kálomista. "The votes of those 250 people will decide whether the film will be among the Oscar nominations or not."
In order to ensure as many Academy members as possible see the film, screenings are being organised in Los Angeles, and HungariCom has hired an American PR company to assist with the promotion.
In addition to the screenings, postcards and posters are being distributed, and ads are running in the Hollywood Reporter, Variety and Screen International, said Kálomista.
Chameleon will open the Hungarian Film Festival in Los Angeles in November. And in the same month, it will be promoted at the American Film Market, alongside the Hungarian films Made in Hungaria, Mázli, Szíven szúrt ország and Valami Amerika parts one and two.
HungariCom is also making a big effort to see Chameleon shows at as many festivals as possible. The film will next show in competition in Osaka, then in Palm Springs.
The five nominations for Best Foreign Film at the 2010 Academy Awards - picked from some 80 submissions - will be announced on January 28.
Chameleon, which stars Ervin Nagy, Gabriella Hámori, Sándor Csányi, János Kulka and Zsolt Trill, is about the relationship between a confidence man and one of his marks, a wealthy ballet dancer who wants to return to the stage after an injury.
