Illés will be presented the award, which comes with a EUR 15,000 purse, at a ceremony at the Staatstheater in Mainz early in June.
Illés, born in Budapest in 1975, started his musical education at the Kodály Zoltán Elementary School in Győr. Later he studied the piano and composition in Zurich, Basel, Hanover, and Karlsruhe, where he currently teaches music theory. He has composed music for the Munich Biennale, the Witten Chamber Music Days, the Thüringen Symphony Orchestra and the Ensemble Modern.
The Schneider-Schott-Musikpreis is awarded biannually. Previous winners include Detlev Müller-Siemens, Adriana Hölszky, Ensemble Modern and Enno Poppe.
