Hungarian Pop Icon Returns to States

English

 Gábor Presser

The concert followed performances in Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco and Las Vegas. The tour marked Presser?s return to the United States for the first time in 36 years.

Although he does not like to explain his songs, letting them rather ?speak for themselves?, Presser told a local Hungarian language newspaper that telling a few stories, not just singing, had to be part of a performance for Hungarians living in the United States.

Presser called it a ?continuing dilemma? that many people explain over again and again the period during which his songs may have had the greatest impact. ?If we start explaining those things?we?ll wrap ourselves up in a pack of lies again, as if we aren?t deep enough in that already,? he said.

?I think that if there would have been as many people against the system in Hungary as we hear about today, the system would have been toppled in 20 minutes,? he said, adding that some of the leftist youth leaders at the time are now among Hungary?s politicians on the right.
