She is the first Hungarian artist to obtain this high award, the office said in a statement.
A committed advocate of dialogue between Hungarian and global culture, Marta Sebestyen has been promoting Hungarian folk music and representing the musical heritage of the Carpathian Basin at the highest artistic level for decades, the statement said.
The honour also implies UNESCO's request that Sebestyen should continue to promote intercultural dialogue and cultural diversity with her performances all over the world.
