There was tight competition among the male singers, said Bátor, who is director of the Bartók+ International Opera Festival of Miskolc. First prize went to the Russian tenor Pavel Kolgatina, second prize went to the Czech baritone Filip Bandzak and the Uzbek singer Rakhim was in third place, he said.
Thirty-eight singers competed in the contest.
The jury was headed by Yevgeny Nesterenko. Other members came from Beijing, Vilnius, Tallinn, Lodz, Barcelona, London, Odessa, Paris and Moscow.
The contest was named after the legendary Russian bass Feodor Chaliapin, whose favourite summer home was in Plios.
