Farkas was also recognised by the Association of Croatian Composers and the Croatian Radio Symphonic Orchestra.
The Russian Alexei Bogorad, a clarinettist and the conductor of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, took first prize at the contest. Assistant conductor of the Singapore Chinese Orchestra Kah Chu Wong came in second.
About 160 conductors born in or after 1976 participated in the contest on October 3-8.
Farkas, born in 1982, studied music in Miskolc and Budapest. He graduated from the Liszt Academy of Music first as a choir director and then as a conductor. He was awarded an Erasmus scholarship to attend Berlin?s Art Academy where he studied under Lutz Köhler.
The competition, named after the great musician and conductor Lovro von Matacic (1899 -1985), is held every four years.
