Hungarians, Swedes, Romanians Pay Tribute to Authors

English

The connection between the three counties goes back to 2004, when they signed a cooperation agreement, mainly with the aim of helping Covasna prepare to join the European Union. Representatives from the three countries worked on cooperation in other areas as well, notably related to three authors who are sources of local pride: Géza Gárdonyi, a Hungarian author best known for his historical novels who spent most of his life in Eger, the county seat of Heves, and whose best known book, The Stars of Eger, is set in the city's castle; Selma Lagerlöf, whose Wonderful Adventures of Nils is a staple of children's literature, and who was the first woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature; and Elek Benedek, the journalist and writer known as "the great folk tale teller".

The county officials participated at the inauguration of a statue of Benedek on Wednesday, the author's birthday.

On Thursday, the Heves County Museum, located in the Eger Castle, will open an exhibition organised with the Värmland County Museum of the work of Selma Lagerlöf. Sweden's ambassador to Hungary will attend the event together with officials from Heves, Värmland and Covasna counties.

The exhibition can be seen in Eger until December 6. Afterward, it will travel to the city of Sfantu Gheorghe in Covasna County.
