Milán Radisics?s image of a partial solar eclipse taken in May 2003 won the top prize in the ?Natural World? category, and a remarkable image of a Muslim mother holding her child at a fun fair in Barcelona by Dániel Németh was the winner in the ?Travel/Culture? category.

In the ?People? category, Turkish photographer Erdal Kinaci took top prize with his haunting image of a poverty-stricken Turkish family.

The Hungarian photographers? winning images are on display, together with 150 of the other best photographs selected by a jury, at Budapest?s West End shopping centre.

Nearly 40,000 people from 16 countries around the world participated in the contest by submitting photos to their local editions of National Geographic Magazine. The winners will travel to Washington at the beginning of November to visit National Geographic headquarters, learn about the making of the magazine and get a tour of the US capital.

The more than 3,000 submissions for the contest in Hungary were evaluated by Gábor Papp, Csaba Heltai, Zoltán Szalay, Péter Korniss and János Eifert. The winning images were published in the July edition of National Geographic Hungary and each of the top photographers received a Canon EOS D30 camera.

Tamás Schlosser, recently appointed editor-in-chief of National Geographic Hungary, opened the exhibition at the shopping mall.

National Geographic has been published in Hungarian since March 2003, with the same format and content as the original publication, but with many original Hungarian articles as well.
