Hungary 2010 World Expo Pavilion Design Chosen

English

The simplicity and abstract nature of the design lend an element of spirituality to the site, which will offer visitors to the busy expo a place for reflection and rest, the jury said.

The design for the pavilion - as stipulated in the tender invitation - was based on the motto "Better City, Better Life" and the shape of the Gömböc, a recent Hungarian invention that has caused a sensation around the world.

The Gömböc, pronounced "Goemboets", is an object created by Gábor Domokos and Péter Várkonyi, that rights itself when in stable equilibrium, much like the trademark Weeble toys, but because of its shape, not because of weight. The Gömböc is thus the first known homogenous object with one stable and one unstable equilibrium point.

Hungary will spend HUF 500m on the thousand-square-metre pavilion. It will spend an additional HUF 2.5 billion on representing itself at the 2010 World Expo.

The runner-up in the pavilion design tender was Mérték Architectural Studio.
