Erkel Theatre |
The decision was made by the government on Tuesday, Minister of Culture Istvan Hiller told the paper.
The theatre, which had a capacity of over 2,000 seats and functioned as an integral part of the Hungarian State Opera over the past few decades, will have to be demolished after being declared unsafe.
The new cultural complex to be built in its place on Koztarsasag Square will accommodate 100 opera and ballet performances annually. During the two-year reconstruction period of the State Opera House, the opera and ballet ensemble will give all performances there.
The state budget will contribute 19.2 billion forints (EUR 80 million) to its operation over 25 years.
If all goes according to plan, the new theatre will open in the autumn of 2012.
