One of the films on the official programme, Katalin Varga, was shot in a part of Romania with a Hungarian minority. Its director, Peter Strickland, is British, but the film's cinematographer is the Hungarian Márk Győri. Many of the actors in the film are from ethnic Hungarian theatres in Transylvania, Vezér said.

Hungary is represented at the Berlinale's Shooting Stars programme, which nurtures new talent, by the actress Orsi Tóth, who is best known for her work with director Kornél Mundruczó.

There are five Hungarian participants at the Berlinale's Talent Campus this year, and a film retrospective to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall will include films by the Hungarian directors Gábor Bódy and János Vetős.

A workshop for screenplay writers will feature writing by the Hungarians Judit Elek, László Bergel and Dániel Erdélyi this year. Last year, the Hungarian director Benedek Fliegauf won the workshop's best screenplay prize.

Berlin's Collegium Hungaricum will host a week-long celebration of Hungarian film called Cinema Total to coincide with the Berlinale. The event will open with a performance showcasing a collaboration between Hungarian composer and DJ Yonderboi and the British director Peter Greenaway.
