Hungary Govt Committed to Deutsche Bühne Ungarn

?It is the government?s firm intention that this very important intellectual-cultural workshop continue to be maintained with predictable financing,? Szászfalvi said, speaking at a forum organised by the leaders of the Tolna County German minority self-government.

Szászfalvi suggested a good decision would be for the National Self-Government of Hungarian Germans to take over the maintenance of the theatre. He said the goal must be to keep the theatre?s support from falling - or from falling to such a degree - that its operation is threatened.

The question of the theatre was brought up because the company that operates it was wound up on October 27. However, the decision was taken by the county and national German minority self-governments because all county-level institutions are to be taken over by Hungary?s central government from January 1, 2012 under an agreement signed earlier by county governments and the state.

The Deutsche Bühne Ungarn?s budget can be negotiated with the German minority self-government in January, Szászfalvi said. It could be financed from the allocation for minorities in the central budget, he added.

Ottó Heinek, who heads the National Self-Government of Hungarian Germans, said the body could take over the theatre?s operation if it gets sources of funding for the undertaking. The body will decide on the matter at a general meeting on November 19, he added.
