Hungary marks Roma Holocaust Day

English

The commemoration, an annual event since 1972, marks the day in 1944 when more than 3,000 Roma men, women and children were butchered in Auschwitz.

Representatives of the Roman Civil Rights Foundation (RPA) placed a wreath at a monument in Nehru Park, in Budapest's District IX. The memorial event was organised by the RPA, Phralipe, the Roma Parliament, the Romedia Foundation and the Dignity for Everyone Foundation. State secretary Gábor Csizmár represented the government at the event.

Events commemorating the Roma Holocaust were held in many other cities around Hungary and elsewhere in Europe. The main event took place in Auschwitz, at a memorial erected 16 years ago.

Some 23,000 Roma were deported from Hungary during the Roma Holocaust. About 21,000 of them lost their lives in Auschwitz.
