Hungary Plans Big For Haydn Anniversary

English

Haydn spent many of his most productive years with the Esterházy court, both in the Austrian city of Eisenstadt and on the Esterháza estate in the Hungarian countryside near Fertőd.

KLASSZ, a new music office set up by public benefit company Hungarofest, is organising the events for the Haydn year which will take place both on the Esterháza estate and in Budapest. On the programme will be performances by the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the Mosa?ques Quartet and the Tomasini Quartet. On May 31, the 200th anniversary of Haydn's death, the composer's oratorio The Creation will be sung in the Hungarian cities of Esztergom, Sopron, Balatonfüred, Pécs and Budapest as part of an international project initiated by Austria called World Creation Day.

KLASSZ's plans extend beyond the Haydn Year: in 2010, the office will organise events for the 200th anniversary of the birth of Ferenc Erkel, who penned Hungary's national anthem, and the 150th anniversary of Gustav Mahler; and in 2011 it will work on celebrations for the 200th anniversary of the birth of Liszt.
