Hungary-Slovenia Border Region Wins Grant

The cultural cooperation in the cross-border region was strong before, but it can be expanded with the more than EUR 1 million in European Union support and state co-financing, said Slovenian chief consular office Drago Siftar.

The project, dubbed Neighbour to Neighbour, involves, on the Hungarian side, two towns with big Slovenian minorities and the National Slovenian Minority Government. On the Slovenian side, it involves the Slovenian Rural Public Benefit Company, the Health and Development Centre of Murska Sobota and the Goricko Nature Reserve Park.

The programme aims to strengthen the cultural identity of the Rába region and draw more people to the Goricko Nature Reserve. The elements of the programme include setting up a museum for Slovenian folk art, buying and renovating a barrel-maker's house and turning it into a showcase for the craft, making a film about local potters, translating exhibition material at local museums in Hungary into Slovenian, and publishing a dual-language cookbook with recipes from the region.
