Hungary, Slovenia Seek to Preserve Handcrafts

The project aims to see that the mastery of folk arts is passed on to coming generations, Zágorhidi said. Although folk arts in Hungary and Slovenia are similar, the techniques and the motifs are different, which makes the cooperation "exciting", he added.

Many handcraft traditions have been lost in Slovenia in the past decades, especially in the northeast of the country, near the border with Hungary, said the project's Slovenian director Janez Krnc. He added that it was hoped the project would help revive at least some of those handcrafts.

Through research, surveys and collecting, professional and educational materials will be created that allow these handcrafts to be taught, said Zágorhidi.

The three-year programme's EUR 900,000 budget is 85 percent support by the European Union. The Hungarian programmes will get 10 percent state support and the rest will be covered by the organisers.
