Hungary to mark International Dance Day

English

Two gala evenings will be held: one at Budapest's Palace of Arts and another in the National Theatre of Pecs, the southern Hungarian city, which bears the European Capital of Culture this year. The Pecs Ballet also celebrates the 50th anniversary of its foundation this autumn.

The Hungarian Dance Association will present awards at the gala evenings, including life achievement awards and awards recognising the best male and female dancers, as well as dance teachers.

The Merlin Theatre in Budapest will host a 24-hour dance marathon on Thursday, open an exhibition of photographs about dance, films will be screened and a forum of experts will be organised to assess the contemporary dance scene in Hungary.

The International Dance Day was introduced in 1982 by the International Dance Committee of the UNESCO International Theatre Institute and it commemorates the birthday of classic French dancer and balletmaster Jean-Georges Noverre.
