 Israeli Cultural Institute

The institute, he said, was set up with a view to enriching Hungary's cultural life with an almost unknown segment of global culture, that of Israel.

The cultural centre will organise concerts, exhibitions, film screenings and club events for Hungarian and Israeli visitors, Jews and non-Jews alike, Gabor Balazs said.

It will also operate as an educational centre, with native speakers giving Hebrew lessons and courses for translators, the director said.

The institute has been set up as a non-governmental organisation in cooperation by the Sochnut-Jewish Agency for Israel, institutes in Hungary, sponsors and volunteers, he said. It will refrain from making any political statement, he added.

Natan Sharansky, a famous dissident of the one-time Soviet Union and Chairman of the Sochnut Executive, said the institute would be the best example to demonstrate Sochnut's endeavour to support and strengthen rather than direct the local Jewish communities.
