Money raised by the charity concert will not only help to revive a musical instrument, but also improve the lives of Sárospatak residents, Sárospatak Reformed pastor Sándor Virágh told the Hungarian News Agency (MTI).
The church is well-known for its outstanding acoustics and its size ? it has room for 1,500 people.
The church commissioned Lajos Mooser, of the famous Mooser family of organ builders in Salzburg, to make the organ in 1871 to mark the 100th anniversary of the church building. Mooser?s workshop also made organs for the basilicas in Esztergom and Eger. These organs, though, have been rebuilt so many times, they have retained just a fraction of their original parts. The Mooser organ in Sárospatak has the most original parts of the three organs, and these parts will be accentuated during the refurbishment.
It is hoped the organ will be refurbished at the renowned Aquincum Organ Factory in Budapest, depending on the money raised for the project. The refurbishment is expected to cost HUF 50 million.
