Japanese Theatre Troupe Holds Workshop in Hungary

English

The FAI FAI troupe, which represents the new generation on Japan's contemporary theatre scene, is coming to Hungary for the first time. The Tokyo-based troupe was established in 2004 by Yon Kitagawa, who had had enough of theatrical clichés. FAI FAI approaches stories with sarcasm and humour, while remaining sensitive. It offers a critique of contemporary Japanese society, but one that is well-intentioned.

The workshop, led by director Chiharu Shinoda and the actor and choreographer Kinuyo Nogami, will concentrate on movement and the use of different parts of the body during the first three days. Participants will work on a short theatre piece using the troupe's methods for the rest of the time. The piece will be performed at the Szkéné Theatre on August 11.

"my name is I LOVE YOU is a love story in short words," says Chiharu Shinoda on the troupe's website. "Whether we like it or not, we need some one with a strong feeling. I think it flows over this story, and it maybe said to be childish, the story narrates carefully the fear of the moving for love. However the end of story is not serious, so we try to describe in silly. For us, silly is not negative word. We are rather insensitve without silly and happy."

The piece premiered at the Tokyo Performing Arts Market and has won many prizes since. After it is performed in Budapest, FAI FAI will bring it to the Mladi Levi Fesitval in Ljubljana, then to Berlin's Theater der Welt.

The workshop in Budapest will take place every day between 17:00 and 20:00 on August 1-10. The fee for participating is HUF 10,000. Places are limited to 15-20 participants.
