"We have tried the impossible and succeeded ... at least in a professional sense," Znamenák said, praising the company for its uncompromising work in the past season.

Znamenák will be replaced by the writer-director György Schwajda, who was the first director of Hungary's new National Theatre. Schwajda's mandate is for five years from July 1.

Schwajda has met the company before, but he did not attend the meeting on Friday.

The Kaposvár Theatre had 288 performances in the 2007-2008 season. It sold 97,000 tickets including 23,000 season passes.
