Katalin Verebics Wins 2008 KOGART Prize

English

Verebics, who was born in 1980 and graduated from the painting department of the Fine Arts Academy, explores deep layers of personality by analysing the body and its organs in her work. She reinterprets the traditional portrait, mixing impressive graphic skills, collage-like techniques and expressive painting.

Each year for the past five year, the Kovács Gábor Arts Foundation (KOGART) has shown a selection of the best career-starters in its "Fresh" exhibition. Each year one outstanding artist is selected from the show and awarded a monthly stipend of HUF 100,000 for a year.

Past winners have said the stipend helped launch their careers.

The "Fresh" exhibition is shown in the Kogart House, a renovated villa on Budapest's historic Andrássy Street. The investor Gábor Kovács opened the venue in 2004 to organise contemporary art exhibitions, build a collection of important 21st century art and foster contact between artists and their audience. The Kogart House is also the home to Kovács's private collection of Hungarian masterworks.
