The production, directed by Franco Zeffirelli, well known for his films, will be performed eleven times until the middle of January. It is the fifth time La Scala has put on the production since 1963.
Riccardo Chailly will conduct and costumes will be designed by Maurizio Millenotti.
Komlósi, a mezzo soprano, has won a number of international competitions and has sung roles in Vienna, Frankfurt and New York?s Metropolitan Opera. She has sung regularly at La Scala since 1990.
Komlósi was born in the tiny village of Békésszentandrás in southeast Hungary. She studied at the Music Academy in Budapest under Mária Ónodi and earned her degree in 1984. She trained further in London and in Milan, then signed a contract to perform with the Hungarian State Opera.
In 1986, Komlósi won the Pavarotti International Voice Competition and performed, side-by-side with Pavarotti, Verdi?s Requiem, conducted by Lorin Maazel.
Today, Komlósi is not a permanent member of any one opera company, but has contracts with four or five opera houses, including Dresden?s Semperoper and Covent Garden in London. In 2006, Komlósi won the Verona per l?Arena international prize alongside José Cura.
