The Krétakör Theatre, under the direction of Árpád Schilling, has shown in an extraordinary performance that Chekhov could be considered a cutting-edge contemporary author even today, the jury said in its assessment of the production.

The BITEF audience award went to ?Walls Talking? performed by the Vojvodina Theatre Ballet Company. The silver audience award and the special prize presented by daily newspaper Politika went to Maurice Béjart?s troupe for ?Ballet for Life?. In the piece, Béjart, who is one of the greatest dance innovators of the 20th century, honoured the memory of two AIDS victims: Freddy Mercury, the front man for the pop group Queen, and Jorge Don, a dancer in Béjart?s troupe. The spectacular performance, featuring music by Mozart and Queen, and costumes designed by Gianni Versace, served as both the finale of BITEF and the opening of the Belgrade Music Festival (BEMUS).

BEMUS, a two-week musical event, will also have Hungarian guests: Budapest?s Monteverdi Choir, conducted by Éva Kolár, will sing, as will Márta Sebestyén together with the folk ensemble Vujicsics.
