Krzysztof Penderecki to Conduct Budapest Concert

English

On the programme will be Mendelssohn's Scottish Symphony (No. 3 in A minor) and Penderecki's own Concerto Grosso for Three Cellos and Orchestra.

The Concerto Grosso for Three Cellos and Orchestra is Baroque only as far as its title and structure. The piece features Romantic movements and sections which express a musical language filled with Prokofiev-like sarcasm.

Penderecki's intention when writing the piece was to create a work akin to the famous Three Tenors productions, but for cellists. The work premiered in Tokyo in 2001.

At the concert in Budapest, the piece's three soloists will be Tatjana Vassilieva from Russia, László Fenyő from Hungary and Monika Leskovar from Croatia.

In 1959, when Penderecki was just 26 years, three compositions he had submitted to the Second Annual Polish Composers' Union competition won all three top prizes. Later, Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima brought him international acclaim, and his St. Luke Passion, a religious work written in Communist Eastern Europe, won him the support of many Westerners.

In the 70s, Penderecki started writing simpler and more accessible pieces. His music made its way from music festivals to the concert hall.

Penderecki considers it natural to conduct his own compositions. A composer must be able imagine himself in the performer's place, he has said.
