The critic Thierry Hillériteau called orchestra director Sándor Buffó Rigó?s playing ?amazing?, a ?magical mixture of impulse and technique?.
The orchestra was formed in 1985, when more than a hundred musicians played at the funeral of Buffó?s father-in-law. Today, musicians from 15 families are members of the orchestra, including Buffó?s 28-year-old son.
Le Figaro said the secret to the orchestra?s success is their ?innate ability of these musicians to adapt, considering that there is no room left for improvisation beyond the intoxicating disorderliness of their theatre shows?.
?This orchestra is the best answer to those who think one cannot be a great musician and at the same time maintain their Roma spirit,? the paper said, quoting the orchestra?s artistic director.
The Budapest Gypsy Symphony Orchestra ? The Hundred Gypsy Violins is on a two-week tour of France.
