Ludwig Museum Shows Dimitrijevic

English

Dimitrijevic was born in Sarajevo but has lived in Paris for many years. He gained international renown with his "Casual Passer-by" series - billboard-size portraits of ordinary people hung in public places - in the 70s and followed up with his Triptychos Post Historicus: Repeated Secret series, that placed priceless masterpieces in a new context: he put a Modigliani in a wardrobe and crowned it with a pumpkin; he hung a Malevich on a bicycle. Dimitrijevic also called history a grand forgery and created images of non-descript locations that he titled This Could be a Place of Historical Importance. In the 80s, he juxtaposed animals with art in images such as Last Congress (1989) that shows famous composers gazing on a tiger pouncing on a piece of meat on a platform.

The retrospective runs from June 20 until September 14, 2008.
