One could say Munkácsi?s professional path in life started and ended with a football match. In 1923, as a young photojournalist, he took pictures of an altercation between a solider and a civilian. The fight resulted in the death of one of the men and Munkácsi?s photograph became part of evidence in the trial afterward. The event established his reputation as photographer with a quick eye.
The other football match took place some 40 years later. While rooting for his favourites, Munkácsi suffered a heart attack and died.
The LUMU exhibition is to the credit of F.C. Gundlach, an established fashion photographer and collector of Munkácsi?s work.
More than 250 of Munkácsi?s photographs made between 1923 and 1963 are included in the show, some of them never before published. They include images for Pesti Napló, which was published in Budapest, the Berliner Illustrirte Zeitung and Die Dame from his years in Berlin, and Harper?s Bazaar, Life and Ladies? Home Journal from his time in the United States.
