Madách Theatre to Premiere Spamalot

Among the guest performer in the production will be Géza D. Hegedűs, Győző Szabó, Anna Balogh and István Hajdu.

The theatre has pulled together all of its "organisational, material and artistic strength" for the premiere and will try to bring a world-class production to the stage, said director Tamás Szirtes. "The work of Monty Python, which has a cult following in Hungary, means something to everybody, crossing generational lines," he added.

Spamalot was created by one of Monty Python's most active members, Eric Idle, several years ago, some thirty years after the Holy Grail first played in cinemas. The musical premiered in New York and London in 2005-2006.

The piece reached "a state of perfection" in the musical form, though many new elements were added to the story, Szirtes said. The musical even has a part that makes it unique wherever it is performed, he added.

"These musicals from the UK or America have to be brought to the stage precisely and to the letter as the authors wrote them. But there is a number in this piece which was prepared especially to give the troupe performing it a chance to incorporate their own country," Szirtes said.

Szirtes decided he wanted to bring Spamalot to Hungary after seeing the piece in New York three years ago. Hungary will be only the fifth country in which the musical has been performed, after the US, the UK, Spain and Germany. Eric Idle is sure to participate at the premiere, he added.

Spamalot will premiere on September 25-27.
