Matthias Church to get new bells

English

The new bells will be put in the place of their predecessors, which were destroyed during the WWII siege of Buda Castle, he said.

Once raised to the tower, Matthias Church, formally the Church of Our Lady, will have six bells altogether.

The Norwegian Fund contributed 318,000 euros to the project, while the remaining 15 percent was covered by the municipal council.

The bells were founded by Perner, a Passau-based German company selected in a public procurement procedure.

The three bells will be put on display in front of the church for a month in autumn, then consecrated and elevated to their final place.

The director said that the cave discovered recently under Buda Castle stopped just before the western facade of Matthias Church, suggesting that the building is not in danger.

The church, originally built in the 13th century but completely rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style in the late 19th century, is undergoing major reconstruction. The external works are soon to be completed while the deadline for the whole project is late 2012.
