"We chose films that were never shown in Hungary and, unfortunately, probably won't be shown," said György Durst, who heads the Mediawave Foundation.

The festival organisers spent two and a half months watching more than 1,300 films before deciding on about 60 to appear in competition at Mediawave. The films include animated films, experimental films, documentaries and features. The festival will host the Hungarian premiere of the Golden Lion-winning film The Wrestler, starring Mickey Rourke.

Festival-goers will also be able to experience a bit of the past at screenings of films from the first decade of the Balázs Béla Studio, established some fifty years ago. Many of the films have an erotic theme to mark the 40th anniversary of the sexual revolution.

This year's Mediawave will again feature the PASSPORT CONTROL International Youth Art Workshop, which involves young talent in the areas of film, photography, music and theatre.

The American Lee Konitz will bring jazz to the festival, and Astillero, from Buenos Aires, will bring tango.
