"The borders were physically opened between the region's countries two decades ago but the intellectual borders have survived and demolishing these is a European task still to be pursued," said Mediawave organiser Jenő Hartyándi.
Events in Szombathely will take place between April 30 and May 8, while events in the border regions are planned for May 12-15.
More than a thousand films were submitted for next year's festival - the 20th Mediawave - by the deadline in early December. Among the musical acts on the programme are the Steve Salas Trio with Bernard Fowler and the throat singer Tanya Tagau.
The conferences to take place include one on educating audiences and another on the links between tradition and nature.
