The hill on which the castle is built has been inhabited since ancient times, but the castle was first mentioned by Anonymus, the scribe of King Béla III around the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries. The castle was originally a property of the Bors family, but was destroyed during the time of the Tartar invasion. A new castle, built of stone, was later erected at the site. It was home to Palatine Ernye, but became the property of Dózsa Debreczeni in 1319.
In 1364, King Lajos the Great took ownership of the castle, building a gothic addition. Later, the castle was the residence of Lajos I, who became king of Poland. Lajos I spent several months of each year at the castle, which was the scene of the signing of the Peace Treaty of Turin in 1381. After the death of King Lajos, the Diósgyőr castle came under the reign of several queens: it was the residence to six queens between 1424 and 1526. The last queen to live in the castle was Maria Habsburg, the wife of King Lajos II.
After the Turkish invasion, the castle ? which was not built to stand massive attacks ? fell into ruin.
Just a short trip from the castle is a thermal bath built into a cave in Miskolctapolca as well as a beautiful palace-cum-hotel in Lillafüred.
