The monument was established with the support of Frank Lowy, whose father was among the Hungarian Jews who died in the camp.

The memorial "symbolises the deportation and suffering of Hungarian Jews. Among them was my father, brutally murdered soon after his arrival just a few meters from where we stand today," Lowy said. "This marks the end of an era for me. When I lost my father, I was 13 and today I am 80."

About a hundred people were at the inauguration of the memorial. Among them were Israeli chief rabbi Meir Lau and director of the Jad Vasem institute in Jerusalem Avner Salev.
