Bluebeard will be flanked by Boris Godunov, a mini mono-opera by the Ukrainian composer Karmella Tsepkolenko, and Papageno, by the Austrian Johanna Doderer. All of the pieces will be sung by the bass-baritone Rupert Bergmann.

Gryllus said the libretto for Bluebeard was inspired by that of Béla Bartók?s well known opera of the same name, written by the composer?s friend Béla Balázs. The new libretto, by Zoltán András Bán, is an internal dialogue spoken in a single voice, he added.

In Boris Godunov, the singer playing the namesake of the Mussorgsky opera prepares in his dressing room but is disappointed by his voice, his costume and his shoes, which are too tight. He leaves the theatre and returns home to enjoy roast chicken.

In Papageno, the bass-baritone ponders the fate of the character from Mozart?s Magic Flute after the opera?s happy end. Does Papageno really stay with Papagena in today?s modern world, he asks.
