László Gergely, who heads the Association of Minority Theatres, said the Ministry of Education and Culture had written the festival's organisers that it did not see any possibility of supporting the festival in the current phase of the 2010 budget.
The festival has provided a showcase for theatre productions by members of minorities in Hungary for seven years.
Gergely said the cost of organising this year's festival would have been 20-25 million forints, including travel and advertising costs. He added that the event was the only opportunity for some of its participants to receive support for new productions and have their work evaluated.
Gergely expressed hope that Hungary's next government could find the necessary funding for the festival and it could continue into its eighth year.
