The Műcsarnok showed foreign works from private collections a year and a half ago, and now it is showing contemporary Hungarian works, said Műcsarnok director and curator of the exhibition Zsolt Petrányi.
The show, called Art Fanatics, explores the relationship between artists and collectors, as well as the collections.
"This time, we were most interested in personal links," Petrányi said. A personal approach is perhaps strongest in the collections of the artist-collectors László Fehér and Pál Gerber, he added.
Each collector was given one room only, which forced them to rethink their collection and choose just a few works. The collection by Lajos Barabás reflects a marked abstract approach, with such notable works as Péter Botos's cube made of fibreglass, Katalin Hetey's steel statues and an op-art composition made on the basis of plans by Vasarely, Petrányi said.
The Hoffman collection shows a move in the direction of lyrical abstract art.
The collection of Gábor Hunya presents Hungarian and Romanian artists, such as El Kazovszkij, Lilla Borsos-Lőrinc and Sorin Taram, whose work can be provocative.
Attila Bognár, who set up the K. Petrys House, has selected works by four artists he considers important: Gábor Roskó, Eszter Csurka, Bada Dada and András Bernáth.
The collection of K.A.S. - Ilona Nyakas - is on the verge of abstraction and figurative art, and the Kozma-kArton collection showcases important Hungarian photographers.
The exhibition runs until May 23.
