??It Is Not Easy To Be a God' is not only a well-researched realityroad movie about the East-West European trade in young women and brutal violence, but also an audience experiment in perception and behaviour, an uncomfortable roller coaster of observation and empathy, cold-bloodedness and compassion, disgust and fascination, undertaken with the help of live video, music and mobile stages. Not only fiction and gruesome facts are mixed in Kornél Mundruczó?s performance, but the questions of humanity, freedom and slavery, embodiment and representation, abstraction and realism are raised from an entirely new, startling and disturbing perspective,? the jury said of the piece.
In the play, two truckloads of Hungarian girls, hoping for a better life in the West, are sold to Eastern European sadists who abuse them to make violent pornography.
