MUPA Hosts Hungarian Symphonic Panorama

The programmes of the ten concerts will be varied as there is just one requirement: that they include at least one work by a Hungarian composer from the 20th or 21st centuries.

 
The series will launch on January 11 with a concert by the Magyar Telekom Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Gábor Takács-Nagy. On the programme will be Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 1, with the soloist Dénes Várjon, and György Kurtág's New Messages Op. 34b.
 
On January 17, the Debrecen Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Balázs Kocsár, will play Stravinsky's Oedipus Rex and a piece by the Hungarian composer Péter Tóth.
 
Stravinsky's Firebird Suite will be on the programme on January 21, when the MR Symphony performs under the baton of Stephen D'Agostino. The orchestra will also play a premiere of a work by the Hungarian composer László Melis.
 
The Budapest Festival Orchestra, conducted by Sylvain Cambreling, will play on January 24. Works by Ligeti, Liszt, Haydn and Berlioz are on the programme.
 
The Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Domonkos Héja, will perform on January 25. In addition to Brahms' Symphony No. 4, the orchestra will play works by Dohnányi and another Hungarian composer, András Szőllősy.
 
The Pannon Philharmonic from Pécs, conducted by Zoltán Peskó, will play works by Liszt, Ravel, Bartók and Dohnányi on January 29.
 
Budapest's Obuda Danube Orchestra, one of Hungary's youngest orchestras, will perform works by Tchaikovsky, Dohnányi and the Hungarian composer Judit Varga on February 4. Domonkos Héja will conduct.
 
The Győr Philharmonic Orchestra will perform pieces by Wagner, Bartók, Kurtág and Dvorak on February 16. Kálmán Berkes will take up the baton.
 
The Miskolc Symphony Orchestra will play Elgar's Enigma Variations and Mozart's Piano Concert No. 15 with the soloist Dezső Ránki on March 8. The Hungarian piece on the programme will be Leó Weiner's Suite, Op. 18. László Kovács will conduct.
 
The Szeged Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Sándor Gyüdi, will play the Hungarian composer Kamilló Lendvay's Jazz Symphony on March 10. Also on the programme will be works by Bartók and Richard Strauss.
