The museum was only the third in Europe to be devoted to applied arts, after ones in London and Vienna. The museum, housed in a remarkable building on one of the capital?s main thoroughfares, has continually attracted visitors from Hungary and abroad.
The new exhibition, called ?Collectors and Treasures?, takes an unusual approach: rather than using an historical period or a technique as a framework, the exhibition relies on the history of its own collection, as it has been enriched over the years. The exhibition is to serve as the starting point for a survey of the museum?s history, the results of which will be published later.
The exhibition presents crucial points as the museum amassed its collection, noting the activities of outstanding museum directors, the receipt of private collections, purchases at auctions and gifts from sponsors.
The value the exhibition?s objects have acquired show their timelessness, even as they are shown in order of their acquisition by the museum.
The Museum of Applied Arts is located at Üllői út 33-37, in Budapest?s District IX
