Estonian Institute director Anu Kippasto welcomed visitors to the exhibition at the opening on Thursday and invited them to attend a glove-making workshop at the weekend.

Dr. Erzsébet Györgyi noted that gloves are more than just an article of clothing to keep one's hands warm. They have numerous symbolic functions, such as in wedding ceremonies, and they were also believed in the past to have special powers against, sickness and bad luck. In Estonia, every girl must make at least one pair of gloves in the course of her schooling, she said.

The band Urtapan played a fine performance at the exhibition opening.
Kéz-Rá-Tét - History of Estonian Gloves is open at the Budapest Museum of Textile and Clothing Industry until April 30.
