Music Academy Celebrates Weiner, Dohnányi

English

2010 is a big year for composer anniversaries: the German's are celebrating Schumann and the Poles have started a Chopin jubilee. There is a Mahler anniversary this year, as well as one for the Hungarian composer Ferenc Erkel. But the Music Academy has decided to follow its own path and honour two of its own teachers.

The academy's orchestra will play a concert commemorating Weiner at Budapest's Palace of Arts on March 2. Weiner's rarely head Farsang scherzo will be on the programme as well as works by Mahler. András Ligeti, the new head of the conducting faculty at the academy, will take up the baton at the performance.

The Music Academy and the Weiner Foundation will unveil a new web page on the composer later in March. It will contain Weiner's biography, information on his works and a photo gallery.

The Old Music Academy building will host the Weiner Chamber Music Competition on April 19-24.

To mark the Dohnányi anniversary year, the Kossuth Prize-winning cellist Csaba Onczay and the pianist Márta Gulyás played the composer's Sonata for Cello and Piano in B minor, Op. 8, at the Hungarian Academy in Rome on February 25. Onczay will take Dohnányi's works to a concert in Tallahassee, in the American state of Florida, in July.

The Óbuda Society will hold a Dohnányi concert on October 15. Gulyás and Onczay, as well as Vilmos Szabadi and László Bársony, will perform.
